Edgewalkers
Defusing Cultural Boundaries on the New Global Frontier

by Nina Boyd Krebs

Edgewalkers comprise a unique group of people who belong to two or more ethnic, cultural, or spiritual worlds; one noted member is pro-golfer Tiger Woods, who boldly celebrates his African and Asian heritage. The concept rejects the idea of a "melting pot" conformity, nor is it aligned with multiculturalism, which tends to emphasize the separateness of each person for purposes of identity and politics. Instead, Edgewalkers embrace their cultural complexity and support the notion that diverse human beings can value their own cultural differences while still engaging in contemporary mainstream society. Bridging cultures, embracing complexity, these present-day frontierspeople stand astride the prevailing culture and the particular group they call their own.

Through forty in-depth interviews with Edgewalkers of varying backgrounds, Krebs presents a broad picture of what it means to be "dancing between two cultures." She shares their personal journeys, triumphs in the workplace, communities and personal lives, and struggles of those blocked by institutional racism, sexism and other barriers.

They walk the edge, redefine the image and forge the uncharted territory of the New Global Frontier.

Nina Boyd Krebs, Ed.D., has spent twenty-two years as a corporate consultant and psychologist. She received her doctorate in education from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She has authored numerous publications, including the groundbreaking book titled, Changing Woman Changing Work. She lives with her husband in Sacramento, California.
