Legacy of Courage
A Brave Woman's Search For Her Mother's Killer and Her Own Identity
— A True Story

by Paula Mints

Sitting in her cozy kitchen reading a newspaper article about a homeless woman found dead, Paula Mints is unaware that the fragile bubble of safety she has constructed around herself and her new marriage is about to be shattered. The shock comes only a few hours later, when the police call to inform her the woman is her mother. Then the tumultuous memory of Paula's painful childhood at the mercy of her mother's schizophrenia and eventual disappearance becomes an unavoidable, terrible presence.

While trying to come to terms with the reality that she has lost any chance of renewing a mother-daughter relationship, Paula is faced with an even more startling and horrifying revelation: her mother was savagely brutalized and murdered.

With the possibility of finding the murderer slowly slipping through her fingers because of an apathetic justice system, Paula becomes determined to prove that the murderer's victim was more than just another crazy homeless person, but someone once loved and treasured. Now it is up to Paula to fight the legal wrangling surrounding her mother's death and to bring the killer to justice. On one level, this is the story of a criminal investigation that reveals the secret truths and troubling realities of one woman's struggle to right a grievous wrong and forge a bond across time. On another, this is the tale of a cathartic journey which teaches how to forgive, find love and gain the peace that comes with healing.

Paula Mints earned her bachelor of science in marketing and an MBA from San Jose State University. A writer and analyst for Strategies Unlimited, a marketing company, she also volunteers at a local soup kitchen serving meals to the homeless and at a shelter teaching writing to abandoned children. Ms. Mints lives in San Jose, California.
